Sounds Marine is a boat refit and maintenance facility located in Waikawa Marina, Picton. We pride ourselves on our high quality workmanship and attention to detail and communication with clients throughout projects.
We have a great team here who love what they do with all the tools of the trade, what we don't do in-house we can facilitate via specialist contractors to get you the final result that you desire. Our trusted contractors can assist in areas such as: marine electronics, electrical, upholstering, rigging & marine surveying.

Boatbuilding Repairs, extensions, alterations & refits

Complete repaints in large indoor facilities
- Our reputation of high gloss super yacht finishes and attention to detail in our painting work is renowned throughout the country.
- Our team of experienced painters take great delight in transforming vessels from old and derelict states to turning them into vessels to be envious of. Our repaint reputation is of such a standard that we draw vessels from far afield.
Varnishing
- Refreshed varnish work can immediately lift the appearance of your vessel. We offer a complete range of oil, single-pot, or two-pot varnishes for interior and exterior. Our attention to detail will provide you with a finished product that expresses our highest level of quality.
Bow and stern thruster supply & installation
- Bow and stern thrusters ease of use has made them fast become the ‘must have’ accessory in recent years.
- Simple controls give you, the owner, more confidence when manoeuvring in tight or undesirable conditions.
- Technology in recent years has seen the thrusters become less noisy and easier to maintain with sealed drive units being a feature.
- Today’s thrusters offer a range of ‘Smart’ control panels - touch panels, joy sticks, boat switch panels or even remote controls can control your thrusters -and a ‘Child-Safe’ safety feature gives you peace of mind they can’t be ‘accidentally’ played with!
- We are agents for Side-Power, Lewmar, Vetus and Max Power thrusters.
Teak Decking
- From teak replacement, re-seaming and supplying pre laid panels, we can offer it all here.
- We are also able to offer a cheaper option as Marlborough’s agent for Marine Deck. A long lasting and hard-wearing surface made from high density Cork.

Paint touch-ups
- Our computer based tinting system can make any colour, we can colour match to existing paint to ensure the repaired area cannot be seen*.
- We pride ourselves on our painting techniques and tools that enable us to hide repairs and avoid painting full panels.
- We also offer gel coat repairs where this is a practical option.
- * This may not apply to surfaces that are aged or deteriorated.
Cut & polish
- Caring for your paint work or Gelcoat by having it polished on a regular basis is one of the best ways to prolong the life of your vessel coatings.
Antifouling
- Antifouling of your vessel is arguably the most important maintenance that you will regularly undertake on your vessel.
- If you have a need for speed, protection or a longer lasting antifoul then we can supply and apply the antifoul coating, catering to every vessel's need.
Propspeed application
- We are approved applicators of Propspeed. Propspeed is a non-toxic, silicon-based product suitable for your metal objects under the waterline such as propellers, shafts, struts, rudders, trim tabs etc. Propspeed is used with exceptional performance globally.
Osmosis peeling and repairs
- If your vessel has isolated Osmosis blisters, then we can undertake spot repair work as required and have you back in the water in next to no time.
- If, however, your vessel has more extensive Osmosis blisters over the whole of the hull then we are the only boat yard situated in Marlborough with a Pro Peeler. A Pro Peeler is a uniquely designed tool which can remove up to 4mm of fibreglass in one pass.
- After the hull is peeled the vessel is left to dry out so a new fibreglass and Antifoul system can then be applied.
Fiberglass repairs including on Campervans etc.
- We are experienced in fiber glassing with polyester, vinylester and epoxy resins.
- We can repair damage to campervan, jet ski, marine vessels etc.

Insurance Repairs
- We undertake repair work for all insurance companies. From your quote all the way through to pick up/relaunch we can take care of it along the way. We work in with all insurance companies taking away the hassle for you.

Our Facility
- We can accommodate vessels from trailered boats up to 80 foot inside our sheds.
- Three seperate sheds to allow for individual project management.
- Purpose-built workshops are fully compliant and equipped with extractor fans and a catchment sump.
- A component spray booth allows for items to be hung to ensure a highly professional finish for boat components, rigging parts, kayaks, rowing skiffs, dinghys and all other small items requiring high gloss finish.
- A fully equipped cabinet-making workshop.
- Computerised tinting and paint matching room.
- Buildings and facilities are fitted with a monitored electronic alarm system.
- Full travel lift access inside our buildings.
- Exterior water and power facilities.
- Our yard is fully tar sealed and equipped with catchment sumps.
